The sun is shining. The heat is comfortable. The wind blows genitally. Then a little more forceful, making cards fly off tables and frantic gamers scramble after them. Only to return to the table with a giggle on their lips and the game continues. Yes, we are outdoors at a weekend festival called Paris est Ludique. Not "Gay Paris" but "Playful Paris." Where publishers from all over France come to demo their new game, classic big sellers and games for the future. First time and famous designers show up to to get reactions from their prototypes and maybe their signature on a contract. Also Belgium publishers get in on the act and somewhere, hidden away there is even an English one too. But that is not what you see as you walk around the Pelouse De Reuilly. It's all the smiling faces from the thousand guests that are walking around. From the demonstrates, content to retell the story of why their detective is addicted to cigarettes or why it's important to save the animals in the zoo. Even from the security personnel, who are amazed to see some many gentle people having fun together. And these smiles reflect in the environment all around. This is not the first time that I have been here and felt this ambiance. PeL (Paris est Ludique) is my local big event, where I get to catch up with friends and contacts that I have made over the years. It is the second best event that I attend every year, after Essen (nothing will beat that). And I enjoy every minute of the wondering and babbling that takes place there. It's family friendly exterior entices thousands of parent to sit down and have fun with their kids. With it's outdoor events, gaming tournaments, there were also the awards for the editor and authors of games. So much going on but all well organised. A lager event that is getting larger and large. In fact, this years ticket sales were 7,000 more than the year precede. A total of 20,000...(your gonna need a bigger boat!) So I played as much as I could, so I could show you what is new and coming to our hobby. And maybe a be of that smiling has been captured on video and rubs off onto you. Roll on PeL 2019... =) Overviews and interviews from Pel

Sit down little children and let me tell you the story of Little Red Ridding Hoods Grand farther, the Troll. Who fought in a great war, married a Forest Spirit, and birthed a Architect...This is all a Paper Tail? This is the game, Paper Tales. Which is played out over many generations...Not of your life, but of a fairy tale kingdom that you create. You'll be drafting characters and creature and placing them into your make believe realm. Each has a job to do, collecting resources, defending your realm or some other using some magical power. They will help you build up a town, which also grants you powers but demands high land taxes (bloody politics.) The sad news is, nothing last forever. As at the end of each round your noble citizens will grow older and shuffle off their mortal coil. Leaving a hole in your life and kingdom, to be refilled by another. This game has a lot of similarity's to a 7 Wonders, but is quicker playing and although abstract, has a real feeling of building something. This small card game has an epic-ness that will make you forget that fairy tales are not real as you are quickly absorbed into this other world. The game may not look like much due to the low production costs, but it sure packs a punch. If you were, like me, not a fan of the multi award winning Bauza game. You may find this more pleasing as I do. Now that my story has finished, I need to pack my bags and get ready to move into another magical kingdom...Essen. Yes, next week is the biggest game show, this side of the globe. And I will be there. So expect a pause from me as I play my days away there. Maybe you too! If I don't catch you there, I will catch you on the other side, in a Double-Back Monthly. Ciao for now =) Paper Tales - How To Play/ReviewIt's not every day that you get to hang around with friends and play games all day. Also it's not every day that you get to hang around with a board game reviewer friend and play games all day. And it is not every day that you get to hang around with a board game designer/review friends and play games all day....But I have been privileged to do so, with one of the sweetest guys I know. Philippe Tapimoket.
If you know that name, you probably have been living in France for the last 10 years. Philippe is a devoted board game player, who for many moons has written reviews for Tric Trac (the largest French board game site) also a site he created "Vin d'jeu", as well as some videos reviews along the way. He also introduced me to Rémi Gruber, the head honcho of RUNES Editions, the publisher of his game. I have been playing all kinds of games with Philippe, as he has an open mind about what is a game. I have also played a few of the prototypes that he has developed over the years. One of those prototypes is called Blackwood. A game, where players are Witches, making potions to gain respect from the council of Blackwood. To gain a seat beside them. Here is a "How To Play" and "Review" of his first, but not the last, published games Setting up the game... 2:27 How do you play this?... 4:40 Is it your cup of tea?... 13:14 Technical Score... 9 / 10 My BGG Score... 7.5 / 10 Combined Score... 8.25 / 10 Setting up the game... 1:34 How do you play this?... 3:55 Is it your cup of tea?... 7:43 Technical Score... 9 / 10 My BGG Score... 7 / 10 Combined Score... 8 / 10 So, there is a round up of reviews at this time, courtesy of Mr Tapimoket. If fact, there will be many more coming thanks to this wonderful Chap =) |
